ENG 102-8. Guest Workers and Günter Wallraff

Hi again,
I also want to talk about the picture and the meaning of it. This picture is from the book cover of Günter Wallraf, who disguised himself as a Turk worker in Germany and he is a popular German writer. He became Ali and looked for a job and he saw the hard life conditions of German Turks. This book, Ganz Unten (At the Bottom)( En Alttakiler),is very nice and interesting book for learning the life conditions of Germans, Turks and also the guest workers in Germany as Turks.

Germans said that they wanted "workers" not individuals. Germans made health controls to Turks which were very pejorative such as wrote line numbers on the bodies of Turks, looked every little points on their bodies etc.

ENG 102-7. Stereotyping

Last night I finally finished my essay, which is about stereotyping of German Turks. I had a chance to make many researches about that topic and I found interesting points about that topic.
First, stereotyping is a public acceptance about specific social class. It is a subjective hypothesis, which we learned that in SPS 102. The philosopher Sayid said that West is the objective one, who talks instead of the subjective East. In that case public is the subject and the object is the stereotypes. German Turks are stereotyping because of their education level, physical aspect and social differences. In addition many Germans do not like Turks as guest workers at all. They gave hard works which needed physical strength and these works were unhealthy for them. I think these seperations between different cultural groups will be live in a harmony in future as Amin Maalouf stated that.

ENG 102-6. End of the hard weeks

Hi everyone
I know I didn't write much these last two weeks because I have many exams and presentation in ENG102. I am really sure about that I hate HIST 192 and SPS 102. If I can pass these lectures that will be the best present ever :P Ohh.. I just forgot that I wrote my first draft of the research paper. I realize that I studied as much as I did for ÖSS. It was too hard that I was expected. I hope the schedule will be fewer that this semester. I hope that everybody cann pass the exams and have good points:)

ENG 102-5. Presentation Groups

Monday we decided our presentation groups. Metin, Ebru and I are a team. We are the black team. Today we made some practices for presentations and for discussion questions. Every team made good questions and organize the class. But we made the best=)

ENG 102-4. Marthin Luther King

Today I read the text " 3 ways of meeting oppression". The context is very impressive because his speeches are very interesting and affect the majority of the black and white public. He talked about the civil rights. He established that the best way for Negro's to struggle for their rights is the non-violent resistence. I didn't like the second way which is the physical violence. In my opinion people shouldn't use physical power against to each other at all.

ENG 102-3. Research Paper

I sent an email to Sonja about my topic but I want to write about it a bit more spesificly. We have to prepare the annotated bibliographies. I am going to write about the stereotypes which has the question " Analyse how a particular cultural group of your choice is typically stereotyped within its own society and examine some of the implications of this stereotyping"
I am going to write about the Turks who live in Germany. I will analyze their cultural, social, physical and also their living conditions. During my research I will use cinema, media and book sources. I want to write about that topic because some of my friends from my high school are now living in Germany for studying at some universities. I have some films in my mind which are directed by Fatih Akın.

ENG 102-2. The Graduate

First week we began to examin the adolescence and the article of Nichol.
The article talks about the devaluation and pejorative perceptions of youth as in the movio "The Graduate". It was my first time watching the movie. The main character Benjamin has some issues with his family and his future. In the first scene of the movie we can see the struggles that he has the transition between youth to adulthood. Ben's family organizes a party for him and for celebration of his graduate and at that party there are only the friends of Ben' parents. In other scenes we can see that Mr. Braddock forces his son to decide his future. He is not listening his son in other words he is not let Ben to talk and not let him to express his feelings and ideas. Sonja was gave us a little part of the conversation between Ben and his father. In that conversation we can see it easily. Also the realtion between Ben , Elaine and Elaine's mother is too weird. I can't understand Elaine too. Why did she run away with Ben? He is wrong and she knows it but still she left with him. He had an affair with Elaine's mother and this didn't stop her. I just can't understand their love.
